Life is a process, not an object. As cells became more complex they adapted to take on specialized roles to create multicellular beings. These new organisms became animals or plants.
Organisms have an existence that transcends that of their components. Individual cells are replaced during the life of the organism, yet the being itself exists as a form of life. It is not immortal, but, like cells, each organism has evolved a process for replicating itself, so the species survives the death of its members.
In time these organisms developed a collective intelligence that enable them to adapt to their environment. Animals are capable of far more complex adaptations.
More complex animals have developed intelligence to pass on to their offspring, such as hunting skills, or history.
Sentience is yet another force. It is not an object, but a process. It has an existence that transcends its components, too.
