Cycles

This image from the Hubble Space Telescope is of the spiral galaxy 57 in Messier's catalog.

spinning

we thumb the days to mark the pass of time
because the daylights regular progression
attuned archaic cults to celestial rhyme
to conjure our importance in the succesion.
the seasons churn because our planet tilts
which cants the cast of solar radiance
the cycle of regeneration builds
to count the turning years’ significance.
and now by astronomic divination
we’re but a mote within a spiral arm
that pinwheels in a galactic rotation
with myriads, around a black hole swarm.
two hundred fifty million solar years
from now our universary reappears.

Electrons around nuclei, the earth around the sun, the sun around our spiral galaxy all spin. Is this another connection?

From the moment of creation 'til now, is this, too, a cycle? Predictions based on precise measurements of the changing distances between remote objects tell us that the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate. Thus our fate is to separate further and further, as time passes.

That is, unless the picture we have today is missing something we have yet to discover. In the last few decades our view of the Cosmos has changed so much our concept of the future is bound to be very different than it is today.

We now know that the matter and energy we a familiar with are dwarfed by things we can’t imagine: Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

Looking out, towards the Heavens, and in, towards the subatomic particles, there is far more “space” than there is matter. Between the stars is one sort of space, yet another is between the atoms. These  concepts of space behave very differently..
